The 15th Gwangju Biennale will take place from September 7 to December 1 next year

The Gwangju Biennale Foundation officially announces that the upcoming Gwangju Biennale will run for 86 days next year from September 7 to December 1. This decision was finalized during the 187th Board of Trustees meeting on September 4, 2023.

Traditionally, the Gwangju Biennale has opened in September of even-numbered years since 2000. However, due to the impact of COVID-19, the 13th Gwangju Biennale, which was initially set for September 2020, was deferred to April 2021 and the 14th edition was pushed to April 2023.

For the 15th Gwangju Biennale PANSORI ― a soundscape of the 21st century (Artistic Director Nicolas Bourriaud), the Biennale reverts to its regular even-year schedule in 2024. The same year also marks the 30th anniversary of the founding of the Gwangju Biennale in 1994, which led to its inaugural edition in 1995. The upcoming edition is poised to be a pivotal moment in the history of biennials and expected to reinforce the Gwangju Biennale's stature as one of the most important global art events.

Gwangju Biennale Foundation President Park Yang-woo said, "With the appointment of our artistic director, the announcement of the Biennale's title and direction, and the confirmation of our dates, we are making steady progress towards the 15th Gwangju Biennale. We invite visitors to observe the latest trends in the contemporary art scene and engage in rich cultural experiences at the Gwangju Biennale during its three-month run next year."
