Chung Dong Chea speaks to local press on September 18.

The Gwangju Biennale Foundation’s Board of Trustees met on Thursday, September 18, to appoint Chung Dong Chea as interim president of the organization. The board’s decision is based on Chung’s leadership and administrative abilities, as well as his affinity for the arts.

Chung served as the 41st Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism from 2004 to 2006, and is currently the president of the Hub City of Asian Culture’s Support Forum, Chairman of the Gwangju ACE Fair, and Executive Chairman of the Gwangju International Film Festival. An active member of the Korean arts and culture scene, he also served as a member of the National Assembly for three terms. In 1994, he was appointed General Secretary of Kim Dae-jung’s Asia Pacific Peace Foundation.

Chung will serve as interim president through May 31, 2015, a role he will be fulfilling without any remuneration.

Additionally, the board decided to establish a provisional development committee, which will be comprised of approximately 15 members and take a role in positively renovating the infrastructure of the foundation. The committee will go into session following the end of the 10th Gwangju Biennale from November 10, 2014, to May 31, 2015.

The foundation’s highest position of Chief Director, which has until now been an adjunct role of the current mayor of Gwangju, will also be re-designated as an honorary position.
