Gwon SeungChan addresses the social and historical conditions of the time he lives in through a multilayered practice. Moving across painting, photography, installation, and media and video, he turns his attention to spaces and everyday scenes that have been left unattended.
His recent series "Powerless Landscape" (2024–) begins with the Bodo League massacres that took place in the immediate aftermath of the Korean War. Visiting and documenting massacre sites, suspected burial grounds, and sites where victims were cast into the water across the country, the work asks how places long held in silence are folded into the landscapes of the present. This session will look at selected works from the series as a starting point for a conversation on the artist's practice.
The program takes place at LEEKANGHA ART MUSEUM in Yangnim-dong, a neighborhood known for its modern architectural and cultural heritage. Together with critic Lee Eunjoo, the afternoon offers a closer look into Gwon SeungChan's formal language and the contexts of his work, and into how unrecorded histories and the memory of communities left in silence persist in the places and landscapes of today.
* On the first floor of LEEKANGHA ART MUSEUM, the 16th Gwangju Biennale Canada Pavilion "Skennen'kó:wa ken?" is on view during the same period (Sept 5 – Nov 15). We invite you to visit the exhibition as well.
