The 15th Gwangju Biennale will take place from September 7 to December 1 next year The Gwangju Biennale Foundation officially announces that the upcoming Gwangju Biennale will run for 86 days next year from September 7 to December 1. This decision was finalized during the 187th Board of Trustees meeting on September 4, 2023. Traditionally, the Gwangju Biennale has opened in September of even-numbered years since 2000. However, due to the impact of COVID-19, the 13th Gwangju Biennale, which was initially set for September 2020, was deferred to April 2021 and the 14th edition was pushed to April 2023. For the 15th Gwangju Biennale PANSORI ― a soundscape of the 21st century (Artistic Director Nicolas Bourriaud), the Biennale reverts to its regular even-year schedule in 2024. The 15th Gwangju Biennale PANSORI a soundscape of the 21st century curated by Nicolas Bourriaud The Gwangju Biennale Foundation (President Park Yang-woo) and 15th Gwangju Biennale Artistic Director Nicolas Bourriaud are pleased to announce the title and theme of the 15th Gwangju Biennale, Pansori - a soundscape of the 21st century. The title pays tribute to pansori, a musical form which originated in south-west Korea in the 17th century to accompany shamanistic rituals. Its literal meaning being “the sound of the public place,” in other words, the voice of the common people. The Biennale will be built as a narrative about the spaces we live in, the same way pansori singers practice storytelling with a lyrical or epic style, accompanied by a drumming for which different beats are connected to specific regions of Korea. This makes the 14th Gwangju Biennale Bubikanova's last exhibition. Gwangju Biennale Foundation President Park Yang-woo has reached out to the bereaved family, expressing profound condolences. Bubikanova was a versatile artist, adept in a variety of techniques, including painting, collage, installation, performance, photography, and video art. She concluded a successful solo exhibition in Kazakhstan in early 2022 before participating in the Biennale.
