    “An exotic night downtown” Come experience the In-between Hotel operated by the Gwangju Biennale Foundation. First opened in 2012, the In-between Hotel was produced by Do-Ho Suh and Suh Architects. Photo: Victoria Tomaschko The Gwangju Biennale Foundation announced today that Defne Ayas and Natasha Ginwala will be the Artistic Directors of the 13th edition of the Gwangju Biennale, in 2020. As curators, Defne Ayas and Natasha Ginwala have been engaged in conceiving daring exhibition and biennale formats within diverse geographies, in each instance composing collaborative contexts and interdisciplinary frameworks that also provide historical anchoring and engagement with local conditions. In Gwangju, they intend to remain committed to the metabolic process of commissioning artworks and live performances, while continuing their active research in models of understanding shaped by the specificity of socio-political realities, complex historiography, cultural knowledge systems, and ancestral traditions, beyond the horizons of western reason.     2018 Gwangju Biennale “Imagined Borders” EIP Announcement Inspired by the history and space of Gwangju The Gwangju Biennale Foundation announced the 2018 Gwangju Biennale EIP (Event Identity Program) under the theme of “Imagined Borders”. The theme, “Imagined Borders”, references both political scientist and historian Benedict Anderson’s famous study of nationalism, Imagined Communities and the Gwangju Biennale’s inaugural edition in 1995 titled “Beyond the Borders.” 2018 Gwangju Biennale Basic Signature Style 2018 Gwangju Biennale Poster Along with the theme, the 2018 Gwangju Biennale Signature is completed with an Avant Garde gothic font and geometrically constructed Korean lettering.     Curators of The 12th Gwangju Biennale 2018 Clara Kim , The Daskalopoulos Senior Curator, International Art (Africa, Asia and Middle East) at London’s Tate Modern since 2016, will curate one of the exhibitions in ‘Imagined Borders’, departing from the view that the present is informed by the past, exploring the desire to find a place in the world and the fate of modern utopian dreams. Kim will investigate the intersection between modernism, architecture and nation-building in the mid-20th century across different geographies and contexts. Gridthiya Gaweewong, currently Artistic Director of the Jim Thompson Art Center in Bangkok, addresses issues of social transformation confronting artists from Thailand and beyond since the Cold War.
