The Event Identity Program (EIP) was developed to visually portray the identity of this year’s concept of ‘The Eighth Climate (What does art do?)’. Additionally, advertising mediums such as the poster and signature for the 2016 Gwangju Biennale was developed using this finalized EIP in order to publicize and promote the identity of this year’s event. The development of this year’s EIP was undertaken by designer Jaewon Seok, who was awarded Gold in the Graphis Poster Annual 2010, selected as the Newly Rising Design Leader in the Korea Institute of Design Promotion 2009 and selected as in the finalists for the Chicago International Poster Biennial 2008. The characteristics of the 2016 Gwangju Biennale’s EIP are the achromatic color schemes and the arrows that represent direction, progress, motion, and destination which in turn address and emphasize the question, “What does art do?” The EIP was developed with the following keywords in mind: dynamism, movement, multidirectional, and multid

CENTER STAGE: Maria Lind in conversation with Trevor Paglen Focusing on Art's imaginative qualities, social impact and active relationship to the future, the CENTER STAGE series directs our attention to the question: WHAT DOES ART DO? Maria Lind: An overarching question for the upcoming Gwangju Biennial, which I’m curating and you’re invited to participate in, is, "What does art do?" This is a notoriously difficult question, but one which nevertheless needs to be asked, particularly in times when infrastructural concerns tend to dominate any discussion involving art. I am thinking about the current (understandable) preoccupation with the effects of the commercial art market and populist programming in mainstream art institutions, as well as the worries among small- and medium-size agents regarding mere institutional survival. Somewhere along the way, art itself seems to have been forgotten. Thinking about your recent exhibition at Metro Pictures in NYC, and particularly your underwater

The Gwangju Biennale Foundation held the 143rd board of directors’ meeting and announced that the director of Tensta Konsthall in Stockholm, Maria Lind, was appointed as the artistic director for the 2016 Gwangju Biennale. Maria Lind will start carrying out duties as the artistic director of the Gwangju Biennale once the director agreement contract is completed. The foundation explained that Maria Lind has been exploring the role of a mediator between art and society on the basis that breaks away from the existing system and sets her apart from the others. Thus, it was decided that she was the most appropriate candidate in addressing the challenges of Gwangju Biennale and setting out a new vision. Maria Lind was born in 1966 and is based in Stockholm. She has been the director of Tensta Konsthall since 2011 and has carried out exhibitions as a co-curator at the gallery, including Frederick Kiesler: Visions at Work; The New Model with Dave Hullfish Bailey, Magnus Bartas, Ane Hjort Guttu

Gwangju Biennale has become one of the world's prestigious biennales in 20 years and recently introduced its new CI(Corporate Identity). Gwangju Biennale(Chief Director: Yoon-cheol Jeon) held a press conference on the 20th of this month regarding development plans of Gwangju Biennale along with release of a new CI. Gwangju Biennale founded in 1995 had used a CI with the shape of lights coming from Mudeung Mountain which is a symbol of Gwangju City. While the former CI symbolizes will of Gwangju Biennale for harmony of the people and expansion to the world, the new CI represents identity of Gwangju Biennale that has been leading discourses of modern arts for 20 years. The minimum pattern unit, 'ㄱ‘ is eye-catching as it visualizes 'breakaway' from the existing frame. It contains challenging spirit of Gwangju Biennale that dismantles the existing rules through open perspectives, satisfying the significance of Gwanju Biennale as an avant-garde festival. It generates aesthetic discourses th
